Fish

Hi All,

We went to a we street market/festival yesterday. The Japanese have a game where you have a paper net, you pay your 100 yen and they give you a paper net, the trick is that as the paper gets wet and if you scoop up fish they will fall through the net, you need to be quick! I dunno how but Leo caught 2 fish I wasn't there when he did it.

What do I know about fish?

A quick read on the net said they need oxygen and a quick way to tell if they are getting enough is see if the fish a gulping at the top of the water for air, well guess what our fish were gulping for it! It said the quickest way to get some oxygen in the water is to get a cup, scoop some out and put it back in at height. This worked a treat, happy fish but I had to go to bed, we didn't want the fish to die, what to do?

We have a toy here with a we electric motor, I got the motor and on the shaft I stuck a piece of plastic, I then taped the motor to the bowl with half the plastic thing out the water, powered it up with a 1.5v D sized battery, guess what, we made a small amount of bubbles, it work a treat! Left it going all night (bet the fish had a bad nights sleep) in the morning they were still alive, Hooray!!! it worked!

We decided today we will take a ride to the local pet store and buy a pump, well in the end for a couple dollars more we bought a tank, pump, water cleaners and fake plants in a kit.

Leo was a bit to generous with the fish food, made the water a bit dirty

New tank all for $15.00NZD

Typhoon

Hi All,

Its hot and humid, there is a light breeze but quite still, it is the night before a big typhoon is going over us tomorrow. I am unsure what to expect, could this be the biggest weather event I experience, will it just be a fizzer, will it just be windy and wet. Japan is hit with many typhoons but generally they are south, this one looks like she will go right over the middle of us, see previous entry with photos. Will keep you posted, by the end of tomorrow I will know.

7:00am Monday morning, blue sky and 25 degrees.

11:00pm - Went to bed, was the odd strong wind gust, nothing more than what we get in Christhcurch in a normal storm.

8:30pm - Rain has stopped and no wind, could it be over?

8:00pm - Wind is picking up, getting some gusts now, rain slowly getting more.

6:50pm - Still light rain, no heavy winds, south of Tokyo is getting hit, will be over Tokyo approx midnight. 25c at 91% humidity.

5:40pm - Just normal rain, no high winds, no heavy rain.

4:16 - I hope Fukashima Daiichi Power plants exposed spent fuel rod pools can withstand the storm!

4:10pm - Rain is just starting to hit Tokyo, 27 degrees 70% humidity.

3:50pm - Warning on TV large amounts of rain and flooding in Saitama, it is the next big city south of Tokyo, batten down the hatches!!

1:40pm - What a hot day, I am told before a typhoon the weather gets warm, been out shopping, had lunch, where is the typhoon? Has been updated that it will roll in tonight!

6:30am - Fine weather, no wind, 23 degrees and the sun is shining, are we saved form the typhoon?

Weather

Hi All,

It would seem the very hot weather has past, in NZ the seasons slowly change but here is is very sharp and quick, like days in the 30s and within a week we are down to the mid 20s. Been much cooler at nights now. The worst is not over, there are a couple Typhoons heading our way grrrr windy things they are, have not been directly effected by one yet but one looks like could be a direct hit!

Some pics I snapped off the TV

Old People

Hi All,

I have noticed here that there are a lot of old people, I don't mean people in their 60s I mean people in their 80s and 90s. The Japanese seem to live a long time. There was an interesting fact on the news not so long ago too, Japan has 50,000 plus  people 100 years old. I think I see most of them around here :)

Lightening and Thunder

Hi All,

Last night over Tokyo was a huge electrical storm, the thunder was so loud and so strong it would shake the house, we would get a flash of lightening and a split second later the thunder!! I think most people would of been woken up last night, was like a giant canon going off outside the house!!

Update - Saw on the news houses with windows blown out, walls knocked in, damaged roofs.

Disney on Ice

Hi All,

Sorry have been a bit slack with my blog for the people who are following, I have been to festivals, BBQs and been out and about. The houses next door are coming along, can't really show to much as they cover the construction site to stop dust and stuff getting on other houses.

I really enjoyed Disney on ice, the skaters are pretty dam good! I took some photos but as you can imagine unless you have a $10,000 camera, huge flash and a super lens it is hard to get photos in the dark.

Anyway take a look, was real good! If you get the chance I recommend it!

Tokyo Summer

Hi All,

It was on the weather news that we have had 25 days straight of 30+ degrees, I think yesterday was the first day it didn't go over 30 but it was about 29c so still close to 30 :)

Lets hope we see a decline in the temperature over September.
